Dr. Xernona Thomas

Dr. Xernona Thomas is a long-time leader in our community. After recently retiring as the Superintendent of Clarke County School District, she has transitioned into her role as Head of School for Downtown Academy. Dr. Thomas was the first woman to serve as superintendent for the Clarke County School District, and she is a recent recipient of the Footsteps Award, honoring the legacy of UGA’s first African American students. Her career has included over 30 years of experience in education and social work in our community.
Xernona has been a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and for many years has desired to marry her vibrant Christian faith with her passion for education and creating opportunities for a better future for children. With a strong heart for our community and a burning desire to help prepare children for a better future, Dr. Thomas is a godly, experienced educator who provides leadership to Downtown Academy students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Dr. Thomas is a life-time Athens resident and holds three degrees from the University of Georgia, with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism/Public Relations, a masters degree in Social Work, and a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.
